No Gucci Cruising Tonight Opakapaka
Got back late from meetings tonight. Decided not to eat dinner...too tired to go out, not hungry anyway, plus I had a burger for lunch (cafe was having a problem and didn't have anything else) and I feel fat. Doing some work here tonight, also gathering info for a friend's trip next month (he is from HK, returning to HK for a visit, and has asked me to get him PLU info...I think that is hilarious). And that's about it. I'm just not in thr mood to go looking for opakapaka boys tonight.
Was planning to have dinner with Fritz tomorrow night but now it turns out I will have a post-meeting meeting with my bosses before they get on the plane for the overnight flight home. I am glad I decided to stay until Friday morning. And of course, i go to San Francisco Friday for the weekend, and am meeting some Fridae friends for dinner. Yay!!! (and yay for shopping!)
Adrian got home OK yesterday, had to work his regular 11 hours today, plus 11 hours Thursday, plus 8 hours each on Friday and Saturday...he didn't have to take days off for his visit out here but he has to make up all the time.
I am so glad we took the vacation days here. When I come to Hawaii to work I really don't get to enjoy it, so I needed the vacation time to have fun. Honolulu is a great place, Waikiki is a great area in which to stay, but it's best when someone is paying for it...if only I can get out and enjoy it.

Just a Quick Opakapaka Update
I started working Monday...easy enough. Had a morning meeting, then came back to the hotel for lunch with Adrian. Left him to go shopping and cruise the cute salesmen at Gucci and Prada while I came back to prep for Tuesday's meeting.
Monday night we had dinner with Fritz and Kim before taking Adrian to the airport for his overnight flight home. Yay for Fritz and Kim! Boo for overnight flights! At least he was upgraded. He got home OK today, tired but determined to stay awake until a normal bedtime tonight.
Had a second meeting with the same guy today, then met with a local professor of SE Asia politics to talk about my big, year-long research project, the one taking me back to SG and KL next year. After talking for a couple hours I have refocused my project some, but no worries, I'm still returning to those two places.
Spent tonight working on stuff. The rest of the folks from my office arrived tonight. I am avoiding them. Sitting around drinking mai tais with 60-year old straight men who are thrilled to be away from their wives is not my style. I will go to a gay bar and drink mai tais there instead. Unless I have work to do. Like tonight.
Wednesday night maybe I will go cruise the cute salesmen at Gucci and Prada.

Opakapaka
An Opakapaka is a fish, a Hawaiian pink snapper. And I'm sure if you tried really hard (well, maybe not too hard at all, actually) that could be turned into a sexual reference.
But I digress.
Hawaii has been fun this weekend. We have drunk a few mai tais. Friday we spent at the beach here at the hotel, then got all dressed up and went to a fancy restaurant for dinner...so fancy it doesn't have a sign and we drove by it twice before we finally called them and got the details. The food was great, some of the waiters seemed flirty, and all in all it was a good night.

We had planned to go out afterwards, but we got back to the hotel almost at midnight and still had to change and make our way out...and the jet lag was hitting hard. So we opted for sleep instead.
Saturday the weather was mixed, and seriously, it would be completely different at points only 2 miles apart. Weird. But we finally went snorkeling at Hanuama Bay, whihc is a beautiful nature preserve where you can snorkel right over the coral and play with the fish. Beautiful place, and a few cute guys, too.

Saturday night we were out at a restaurant I'd visited before which had plenty of cute waiters the last time I went. There was about a 45-minute wait, and I asked the hostess to please seat us in the "cute waiter" section. She laughed at that and then ended up putting us with a waitress. Oh, well, at least she was funny. Food was good but we were way too stuffed for dessert, so we walked back to the hotel.
We ended up napping, and when I woke around 11pm I was sure we were done for the night, just too tired to go out. But we rallied, and headed out to this one club a short walk away. It was packed, and there were plenty of cuties, but it was mostly locals who know each other and I didn't get the sense they spent a lot of time talking to tourists...and why should they, since we leave soon, anyway. There was one guy who looked like he could be Barak Obama's son...he was checking one or both of us out but we never did chat with him. Anyway, we ended up going to bed around 2:30am and both had trouble sleeping...but we got up today to beautiful weather, so out we went.
We headed down to the gay beach...yes, there's a gay beach in Honolulu, though there were a few straight couples who hadn't gotten the word. Mostly locals, a few tourists, and some surfers...yum. We got cruised a little bit, but again, it doesn't seem like the locals spend much energy on tourists.

We're going to hit another club tonight, AFTER dinner, AFTER our deep tissue massages at the hotel spa in about an hour and a half.
Beautiful day. My last vacation day, I have to start working Monday, though Adrian gets to play until he flies home tomorrow night on the overnight flight. I think he's had fun. I know I have.

Aloha Hawaii
We're back in Honolulu, staying on the beach in Waikiki. The trip here Thursday was fine, though long of course...11 1/2 hours in the air, a total of about 16 hours from the time we left home until we got checked in and arrived in our room.
Flying out here worked great. We managed to upgrade to First Class on both flights, which is important since they were both long flights. On our first one, there were only 19 people in the cabin, which holds 24, so we got pretty personalized service from the 2 very gay flight attendants. They weren't as cute as the boy sitting two rows in front of us (and we couldn't figure out if he was gay or not, but he was fun to look at) but they were nice and we chatted a bit at different times. One of them gave us a bottle of wine before we got off, which was a really nice thing to do. I'll definitely write them up in the post-flight survey online. The second flight was more crowded and the flight attendants were all women, all older, and all a bit flighty, but we got here OK and that's all that matters.
Adrian, who hasn't been drinking in a year, started drinking wine with dinner again recently. Yesterday, though, he made up for lost time on our second flight: champagne before takeoff, a mai tai before lunch, wine with lunch, after-lunch liqueur, and then a beer at dinner last night down the street from the hotel. Yeah, he slept pretty well last night, I think.
The hotel is great...they had trouble finding a room with a king-sized bed so they upgraded us to the nicer tower, the one I used to stay in when I was a Hilton Gold VIP member (I'm only Silver now). Nicer rooms, free access to the gym, Starbucks in the lobby, located next to the parking garage so makes it easier for us...good deal all around.
Weather here should be good...some clouds and showers off and on during the day, but highs in the 80s and lows in the 70s at night...a lot different from DC right now!
Got up around 8am...sleeping pills kept me asleep through the time change/jet lag. Headed down to the beach in a few minutes...yay!!! Tonight, we're out for good food and some dancing, methinks.
Aloha!!

The view from our balcony -- the clouds are normal in the morning, and are already breaking up

A Little Catching Up
OK, so, first of all...photos:

Fabulous and happy

I think these colors work for me

Angelo...always the gentleman

I shouldn't have done those vodka shots
Yeah, we had some fun. I really like this group of guys...spending Labor Day with them was so much fun, and this weekend was very good, a nice break, certainly more low-key than what we did a couple months ago.
My pumpkin cheesecake was good, but not as good as what Doctor Lorraine makes. I also made some very rich chocolate cookies...so rich that I made them very small, just a tiny serving that exploded in your mouth. Yummy, in my opinion.
We also had fried rice and kimchee, along with traditional American foods. And of course the hot tub was fun also. As was the shopping. And the drag. We were so gay, we did everything gay people do, except have sex with men (well, some of them might have...there were a few couples here, who knows what they did behind closed doors?).
In other news...
Last spring I worked with my old research institute to help create their list of research topics for this year. I made sure that there was at least one topic that dealt with national security issues in Southeast Asia. Then, this fall, I submitted a proposal for a study on partnerships between the US, Singapore, and Malaysia. The project would involve some research about agreements and plans between the countries, which I can do here in Washington DC; interviews with US government officials and foreign diplomats here in Washington; and, interviews with government officials in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.
Are you sarting to figure out where this is going?
Yeah, that's right. I got the grant. I start working on the project next week. And next spring, probably in April, I will be back to KL and Singapore. So to all my MaGaysian friends: I told you I'd be back. And I will see you soon (well, in 4-6 months, but still, sooner than not seeing you at all).
Yay!!!!!!!

Good Beach, Bee-otch
Had a nice time at Rehoboth Beach with some of the boys. Did a little outlet mall shopping (cute shoes!), had some great food, played "Jenga," ate more good food (killer pecan pie!), watched Mean Girls, hot tubbed, talked about life and family until 2am, did some more outlet mall shopping. Oh, and did drag. Photos to follow.

Off to the Beach
I'm heading to rehoboth Beach with friends this weekend for a pre-Thanksgiving party. These are the same folks i enjoyed Labor Day with, though it'll be a little colder this time. No beach, but lots of hot tubbing.
We're making a big feast Saturday. I'm wondering which will be more popular: my pumpkin cheesecake and chocolate cookies, or the 12 bottles of wine I'm bringing?

Now THAT'S a Party
What does the grocery store clerk think when I come through the line with 8 bottles of white wine, 4 bottles of red wine, and a bag of frozen tater tots? Oh, and a 2-liter bottle of Caffeine-Free Diet Pepsi?
Tonight I made a pumpkin cheesecake and some cookies for the pre-Thanksgiving get-togetether at Dan's Delaware beach house this weekend. Driving up there Friday after work, should be fun. No beach, it's COLD this weekend. But there's a hot tub, and 13 gay men.
Because of baking tonight I didn't run, so I need to get up early tomorrow and go to the gym. I give that about a 50% chance of happening.
Oh, and QR and Ikanbillis...yes, Ethan will be there this weekend. I'll take photos for you.

Another Calendar Party Video
I think I like this version better.
Nothing much today. It rained, I went to work, it rained some more, I didn't strangle my boss, I came home. I had the opportunity to get moved to the section that deals with China but my boss squashed that because he is a piece of crap.
Went to the gym tonight to run the treadmill and realized the treadmill allows me to play mind games with myself. Specifically, I get bored running on it, and there's no penalty if I quit early (unlike running on a trail, where if I quit, I still have to walk back) so I syopped after 3 1/2 miles instead of the 5 miles I planned on. I'm a little disappointed in myself. But I'm sure I'll get over it.
Last night I set my alarm clock for 6:15. Unfortunately, I set it for 6:15pm, not 6:15am. So I got to work a little late. But it was still there, waiting for me, when I arrived.

Family Time
I went to the University of Virginia, my alma mater, today. Such a special place for me...despite the changes it remains pretty much the most important place on Earth to me.
Wow...that's kinda heavy.
Anyway, I was there to see my cousin, who really hasn't developed the social skills to function well there. But at least today we had a long talk for a couple hours. He and I have never had a real conversation before...usually his mom (my aunt) answers for him. Sad, really. But she wasn't there today so he was on his own.
Funny...we didn't recognize each other at first. He's gotten bigger with more hair, I've gotten smaller with much better hair...and I looked more like a student than he did. Want proof? Later in the day I was in the student union and a lady came up and said "excuse me, I'm doing a survey...are you a student here?" Um, no. I was, though. 20 years ago. heh heh
The next time there is a solo terrorist like the Unabomber I'm going to assume it's my cousin. Seriously, he fits the profile.
Oh, and it's "Proud to be Out" week there. So yay for all the gayboys and girls!!!
OK, enough of that. Here's some more from last Saturday's party, since QR and Ikanbillis can't get enough of the purple shirt and white shirt, respectively.

Calendar Party
Saturday night was the party where we all got to see the calendar that Vu put together, the result of quite a few photo shoots. Vu made a calendar of 12 attractive Asian guys, featuring quite a few of my friends (including Vu himself, of course). The calendar is fun, and we all voted, Survivor-style on a webcam, for the best model. The party was even more fun, especially since I took a new friend, Linh, and got to introduce him to a lot of other friends last night.

Linh and I

Ethan feels me up

Adrian holds -- or maybe hides -- Luis

Dayna, the most beautiful girl in the room -- 20 minutes earlier she was Danny, one of the most beautiful guys in the room
Adrian brought some friends along as well and everyone had a great time. Everyone liked Linh a lot, and they were already inviting him up to Rehoboth Beach for our pre-Thanksgiving party this weekend before I'd had a chance to ask him (I thought I'd wait to see if he liked the guys before I did -- but sadly, he has a school event that weekend that takes priority).
I think I drank most of a bottle of wine by myself. But I spread it out over 5 hours, so it was all good.
More photos are here:
I had given some thought to running up to New York today to maybe catch a show and see my friend Paul. Alas, that didn't work out, so instead I ran 5 miles and made cookies (it took two attempts -- apparently I should be very careful about changing the recipe on my own). Monday I'm headed down to UVA -- the official reason is to see my cousin but it's been a year since I was last there so it's time for my pilgrimage.

Good Weekend So Far
It's turning cold here but so far this has been a good weekend over all, temperatures notwithstanding (and of course, with autumn in the air, i now have a whole new set of clothes to wear :P ).
Thursday night I met up with Linh for dinner. Actually, we started off with me reviewing a short paper he did for school, and not only was it already well-written, but I learned something related to my own research interests. Then we were off to a Thai restaurant across the street, one that I used to go to all the time (Linh lives in the building where Adrian and I lived 2001-2002). Food was good, though they didn't have sticky rice, and I'm wondering what Thai restaurant doesn't have that?? Hmmm. there was a guy there with a woman sitting behind us and he would occasionally turn around and look at us -- not casually, but making an effort. Was he a gayboy there with a friend or a closeted married guy interested in one or both of us? Who knows. Anyway, about 10:40 the waiter asked if we could settle the bill, since they had closed at 10...we hadn't noticed we were the nly people left! We made our way back to his building and hung out and talked in the lobby since he said his roommate would eb asleep upstairs, and for a couple hours we talked about all sorts of things while watching the occasional rowdy drunk come home. Much fun was had!!
Friday night was a first-time event: I finally met Aryaduta, a fellow DC blogger whom I met online after coming back from Asia. Yes, all my MaGaysian friends who also read his blog can now be jealous because I've actually met the man! After having trouble finding my keys and then making two very seriously wrong turns I made it to his place 30 minutes late, which is NOT my preferred way of meting someone the first time (or ever, for that matter). We headed off to dinner, which was fantastic, and then out for drinks, with wonderful conversation stretching late into the night. I won't go into the details of the conversation, as of course that's between he and I, but I did point out to him one of the weird things about bloggers doing something together: "You know you're going to read about all this, right?" heh heh He is a GREAT guy, and I'm not just saying that because I know he's going to read this -- one thing I learned about him is he has no trouble being honest with someone, so if I hadn't liked him I'd have just told him so. But I do, of course, and that's fun. There's a possibility he might have some interesting travel coming up next summer, but we'll just wait and see how the universe works that one out. All in all, I had a great time and am so happy to finally meet this nice guy.
Today was a casual, hang out around town kind of day, and tonight we're off to a party, so that'll be fun. I think I'm making cookies tomorrow. But not today.

Nothing Going On
Not much to report today. Took the day off from work to get the car fixed, blah blah blah, had the battery replaced, yadda yadda yadda, helped a friend with his graduate school application, and so on and so on, got an e-mail from the office that my boss' boss is upset that she's been cut out of something that I've been working on. Oops. Pretty sure I'm not to blame on that one, not that that matters in the end.
More Than Meets the Eye
Watched Transformers tonight, another one of those movies that came out while I was off saving the world for democracy in Afghanistan. Fun film, I'll bet it was great on the big screen. I never watched any of the Transformers cartoons as a kid so I didn't get some of the tongue in cheek references to the old show. But that's OK, because IMDB.com filled in the gaps.
A friend of mine in Malaysia took some photos over the weekend and showed them in his blog. They are beautiful, he's very talented, makes me want to take photography classes.
Speaking of friends in Malaysia, another finished his final exams Tuesday, and as it happens I'd sent him a little gift and it arrived the day of his last exam. So, big celebration day for him. I felt good, I think it made him very happy and I just wish I could have given it to him in person. Yay Eddie!!!
An interesting possibility has come up at work. The fact that I'm even mentioning the tiniest hint about it means I have probably ruined any chance it will work out (karma can be a bitch) but if it does I will be about the happiest man in the known universe.
Lastly, in accordance with Ethan's schedule, I ran 5 miles again today. That bitch.

Doctor, Heal Thyself
On the phone with a friend tonight, I ended up giving him some advice after events this weekend made him sad. My advice basically consisted of, "if you're unhappy, look at what you might be doing yourself that makes you unhappy and consider changing it." My friend has put some limitations on himself that leave him unfulfilled. While he gets some satisfaction from living up to them, he might get more satisfaction if he didn't, just so long as he doesn't hurt anyone.
Anyway, as I'm telling him he should focus on his happiness, we only get one life (even if there's an afterlife, I bet we start all over again, and next time we might not be fabulously gay), rather than letting life pass him by he should enjoy it and open up all kinds of new possibiilties in the process...yeah, as I'm telling him this, a tiny, quiet whisper of a voice somewhere in the back of my head is saying "HEY, YOU IDIOT!!! WHY DON'T YOU TRY TAKING THAT ADVICE YOURSELF SOMETIME INSTEAD OF LETTING YOURSELF BE TOTALLY UNHAPPY FOR A YEAR OR SO!?!?!?" WHY DON'T YOU FIX WHATEVER'S MAKING YOU UNHAPPY?!?!?!?!"
Yeah, my inner voice has a bit of a 'tude.
Anyway, point taken.

Soft Weekend
A good weekend I guess, if a little quiet. But considering all the socializing Saturday through Wednesday, I guess having a slower weekend was OK.
Friday night Adrian and I ventured out to see a movie, The Bourne Ultimatum. I was dizzy by the time it was over but it was a good flick. I've read the original Bourne novels and they were good, though they tended to drag at times (Jason Bourne is one of the most pedantic heroes I've ever seen in a novel, but Matt damon cut his 3-page soliloquies down to "yeah, that's right."). This movie was better than the other Bourne movies, i thought. We saw it at a second-run theater...the movie came out while i was in Afghanistan I think so I didn't see it the first time around. Either that or I was too blinded by my desire to see Hairspray and missed this one. This theater serves food too, which is cool, as I always like to have a burger and a beer with my movie.
That was it for Friday night...we thought about meeting up with Linh after he finished a long dinner with friends, but by the time he was done Adrian was falling asleep on the couch so we saved that for another night. Like, the next night.
Saturday was mostly spent running errands and trying to clear some old clothes out of the closet...if you haven't worn it in a year it needs to go, is what I've heard, and it worked here. That night we went to a country and bluegrass music concert near here...a group I've enjoyed before and saw in Colorado was here that night so off we went. A good time was had, though they didn't play all my favorite songs...that's OK, got 'em on iTunes. Afterwards we met up with Linh in town for drinks, which is nice, because now I can go hang out with Linh without Adrian saying "now, who is this again?" He's a good guy I'm happy to know and am enjoying getting to know better.
Today felt a bit off because we changed the clocks backwards an hour last night, and I always feel off balance when we do that. Got up today and went running with Ethan...since running the marathon last weekend he seems determined to get Adrian and I to run some races next year, so we started with a 5-mile jaunt today. I can handle that -- my regular cardiac workout is 4-5 miles on a machine -- but it'll be interesting to see what happens once he starts pushing us to double-digit mileage.
After getting home Adrian and I made a dim sum lunch with steamed dumplings, shumai, and pork buns, and ate way too much (we ended up not eating dinner tonight because we were too stuffed). Somehow we stumbled across a sitcom called The Big Bang Theory and watched a couple episodes on CBS.com. It's all about these PhDs who are complete nerds...in other words, total fiction! (seriously, I'm not nerd-like...am I?). Cute show. And then it was time for some reading, and then the Sunday night Fox cartoons, and before you know it, it's time for blogging and bed.
Which sounds like a great idea. The bed part, that is.

I'm Just a Sweet Transvestite...
...from Transsexual....Transylvania-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah-ah.
Well, I'M not a transsexual (except that one time), but Dr Frank N. Furter is.
Danny suggested going to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show for Halloween, something I haven't done in over 20 years. Yay for that!!!!! We had a great time, they had a fun live cast to act along with the movie and plenty of loud lesbians, cute skater boys (for Danny), twinkie Chinese boys (for...well, you know who), and just lots of fun people in general. And yeah, we dressed up.

Fun was had, so yay for that!! Hope everyone had a good Halloween, the gayest holiday of the year!!!
