Where to Next?

It was six months ago tonight that Adrian came home and broke up with me. Then, near the end of November, he said he wanted to work on things and try to fix whatever went wrong. Lots of folks ask me how things are going and the reality is it's tough to tell. I'm not really clear on what all has changed. We talked tonight and reaffirmed that we want to fix this, but it's still unclear where all this is going to end up. Being in limbo continues to suck.

Old Friends Become New Friends

Let's skip the stories about poorly timed traffic lights around orlando and poorly trained USAir ground crews in Tampa (but kudos to the flight crew who managed to get us back!). Those negative stories have no place here, when I'm talking about Albert.

World, meet Albert. Albert, meet the world.

He is SO going to kill me for using this photo. But I think it's adorable, so what else could I do????

Albert goes to college in Florida and is studying to be a forensic psychologist. he leaves the occasional short, but very deep, post in his MySpace blog. We met online in 2005 after he'd left a comment in someone else's blog and I clicked over and saw his. He was in his first year at the university and I was still teaching at the time, so I took him under my wing (electronically, anyway). He is from Guam so he's a long way from home, and after the adjustments of the first year he has done really well.

I've made the pledge before that I won't get to know someone well online unless there's a good chance we'll meet someday, so I'm glad we finally got together in person. After I drove over we went to a great litte place for dinner (grilled alligator, anyone?) then hung out and talked for hours, sharing photos from our laptops (I didn't even know he'd gone to Disney World). Sunday morning I introduced him to Waffle House, which he, despite being an occasionally drunken college student, had never experienced. For me, it was sort of a homecoming. For him, it was a chance to ask, "what exactly ARE grits?" He ordered something off the menu but asked them to leave something out of it, and I was a little concerned, because Waffle House doesn't handle change well, but they relented and let him have his breakfast wrap without the bacon. Whew.

All in all a very cool experience, and I'm quite happy to add him to the group of "real world friends."

In the meantime, there are a few more of you out there...

Tomorrow, Not Tonight

Yes, there are tales to tell from Florida, and a photo or two to share. But tonight I'm a tired bitch so I'm headed to bed. After 2 1/2 hours spent driving across the state of Florida yesterday after finally meeting up with Albert, I had a flight get cancelled, and the next one come in a few hours late, leaving me one yawning dog today. And let's face it, I already need all the beauty sleep I can get. So it's night-night time for me, with stories to follow tomorrow. I hope.

A Smell of Salt in the Air

Actually, considering my hotel is near the airport rather than close to Tampa Bay, I think all I'm smelling is jet fumes.

Work has gone OK this week. A two-day conference just wrapped up and then saturday we have a day of meetings with other people.

These weekend trips are OK, I guess, but we typocally use "conference" hotels, so we're near the airport or way out in the suburbs...what I need, of course, is to be right downtown. But considering I'm supposed to give a presentation in the morning, it's probably best I stay in. Which I'm doing. Reviewing my notes. Ironing my shirt. Touching myself inappropriately. Things of that nature.

The weather's been nice, typically Florida springtime. Sunday, as I go home, a winter storm is supposed to hit DC. Lovely. I just hope I get home. Because of course, it is Oscar night. Since I am not flying Jet Blue, I don't expect to be stuck in a plane on a runway for 9 hours. Knock on wood.

Saturday after outr meetings I'm driving across the state to Melbourne to meet up with Albert, whom I've known online for a year and a half but never actually met. Angelo met him last year when he was down here but I have yet to. So YAY for finally meeting Albert!!

Friends and Such

I’m in Tampa, Florida now for a few days of work. It was 75 degrees here, which would seem to be a nice change from the frigid temperatures in DC. But of course it warmed up at home today just as I left. That’s pretty normal for the universe’s little tricks these days.

This has been the week for friends. Over the weekend I got to see old friends and newer ones in NYC, and Monday and Tuesday were spent with old friends here at home.

On Monday Lorraine came to town for a conference, the first time we’ve overlapped here since I moved back. The last time we saw each other was when Adrian and I visited her in Pittsburgh while she was in grad school (and so was I) back in 2002. Now we’re both called “Doctor” and that’s hot.

It’s nice to know some things in life don’t change, and Lorraine falls into that category. We’ve known each other for 15 years (it sounds so much older when I actually say it) and we’ve both had plenty of oddness during that time. She’s a researcher for University of Pittsburgh ut is talking about taking a job here at some point. So yay that!!

Tuesday night was a farewell to Tracy, who us taking the plunge and moving to California. He’s been telecommuting for years with a firm out there owned by a friend…this is the second firm there that he’s worked for and he’s decided it’s time to pick up and move there.

He’s talked about this for years and somehow I knew he’d do it once I moved back here. He made an interesting point last night, that it was easier to say goodbye to me than to any of his other friends, because of course we’ve been through this before, when I moved away in 2002. We still saw a lot of each other during the intervening years, and I know that will be the case now, too. We might even see more of each other than we have in the last few months when we both lived here!

Oh, and I should mention that I have absolutely no interest in the Anna Nicole Smith story. None whatsoever.

New York is Always Full of Surprises

We did a little shopping Saturday. Sadly, the Aldo Liquidation store has closed since I was there in November, so no cheap Aldo shoes for Adrian. Surprise #1. But the rest of the shopping day was nice, with a visit to Uniqlo and a nice lunch in Chelsea. Oh, and new sunglasses for me, so yay.

That afternoon we headed over to a Chinese New Year party thrown by a friend of a friend of Adrian's. It was down in SoHo in a great little...well, not little...2000 square foot loft with a great open space and a terrace and two bedrooms and a bunch of zeros on the price tag. Definitely the nicest home I've been in while in New York, and couple that with the fact that Friday night we'd had the nicest looking cabdriver we've ever seen in New York, and you've got one helluva goodlooking weekend. We met some very nice people there, and some very drunk ones, and some very nice drunk ones. Something I love about New York even more than DC is the great diversity of backgrounds, interests, professions and so on that you find -- lots of people in DChave interesting jobs, but they're all working for the government, and often doing many of the same things in their off-time. Not so in NYC where it seems everyone is totally different. The guy throwing the party does about 4 of these events per year and the invite list keps growing, so I'm looking forward to the next one.

Afterwards we headed to Adrian's friend's house with some folks to hang out, have some Thai food delivered, drink too much and watch a cute Japanese boy dance and kiss all the other asians. That was fun. And a great photo op as well. I'll have to figure out where to post those. And where to post the video. Which will not be suitable for children under 17 unless accompanied by an adult.

Did I mention I recently bought a small digital camera for casual stuff, and it has video capability? Hooray, I say.

Adrian and I wandered down to The Ritz for a couple drinks and ran into none other than Jase, who had taken me there last December with his friends. Surprise #2. Pics to follow. It was very cool seeing him and his comrades again, and I think he was a little surprised too. As well as being more than a little cute.

Sunday was a little more shopping, though we didn't end up buyijg anything. We went to the Young Designer's Market in SoHo, kind of a "farmer's market" for fashion I guess, only it wasn't going on. No idea why not, I even checked their website before we went. Weasels.

The big surprise came as we were walking into Century 21, a huge discount clothing store in Tribeca. If you'll notice in the previous two entries, I was feeling bad about not being able to see Scooter on this trip, but I was determined to see him next time. Fate, however, had a different idea. As we were walking into the store I saw two guys walking right next to me and thought "wow, that guy looks a lot like Scott. And that looks remarkably like Chris." Yes, it was indeed Scott and his boyfriend. Millions upon millions of people in NYC, and I happen to run into the guys that I was disappointed about not seeing. Some good karma was definitely going on that day. And the boys are doing well, and prepping for a trip to Argentina, so that's very cool.

It should be no surprise that Bebe Neuwirth was fantastic in Chicago. We really like the show when we first saw it a few years ago, and we loved it again. Much more comical than the last time, and Bebe did a wonderful job. We chose not to hang out afterwards to congratulate her, as the wind chill below 0 convinced us that hanging out at the stage door was not a great idea.

Later we made our way to Alegria, a big party that happens in New York on 3-day weekends and other occasions. Our friend Ethan had mentioned he was coming up for it with friends and said we should get tickets, so we did. After standing in line at the wrong club for a few minutes (hey, it happens) we finally found the right one. A very good time was had by all, and yes, there will be pix. Despite my self-image issues, I actually spent most of the night shirtless, the first time in a while for that. Don't expect photos of that part. Anyway, Ethan, Adrian and I stayed until 5am, then we put Ethan into a cab back to his hotel (his friends staggered in between 6 and 8:30am) and we wandered back to our own. 4 hours of sleep and we were off to the airport. USAir managed to leave on time (suprise!) but they messed up our luggage when we got home...no surprise.

Some cool stuff with friends Monday and Tuesday nights, so more will follow. For now I'm off to bed as I have to get up and fly to Florida Wednesday.

The Universe Was Against Me But I Love It

I should have known, since it was a bad day at work, that someone somewhere was playing with me. The first steps of this weekend's NYC trip involved a couple stumbles:

- our shuttle to the Metro was late
- the Metro trains were behind schedule
- the self check-in machines at the airport weren't working and the line was huge
- our flight was delayed 2 hours
- I forgot my razor and tore up my neck with the disposable one the hotel gave me
- I slammed my fingers in the bathroom door

But we made it to New York and got to the hotel and managed to get out to The Web last night, which is always fun. We had a great time on the dance floor and Adrian had some cute guy and his not-so-cute friend molesting him, and that's something that always makes for an interesting night. I ran into Christian, a very sweet guy who dances there on Fridays (anyone who remembers my name even though I'm only there about every 6 weeks is, by definition, a very sweet guy). We chatted a bit and I gave him my website address, though I realized on the cab ride back that I forgot to tell him I wasn't trying to hook up with him, and considering all the guys who probably hit on him, I should have put his mind at ease about that. Alas.

Today we're doing a little shopping, then heading to a Chinese New Year party, then going to dinner with a friend of Adrian's. After that, we'll see. Should be a good day.

Though I think I made Scooter sad by not getting together with him on this trip. But I'll make it up to him!

Zzzzzzzz...huh?

The sleep test went OK, I guess. Very strange. I was wired up like a radio which made me uncomfortable, and I woke up more than I normally would and didn't move around as much as I think I usually do. So I don't know how accurate it was.

This morning it was time to remove all the sensors. That hurt. I lost a chunk of hair from my chest, and also my legs, where things were taped on. I think I also lost hair in other places, which was strange, as there were no sensors stuck on me there. Hmmmm....

I went straight to work, feeling a little strange because there was a crease in my face where a hose for my nose (sounds like a Dr Seuss poem) was laying across my cheek. It looked like I'd slept on something strange. There were also a couple red spots on my face where sensors had been placed. I figured if anyone asked I'd just say I was in a bar fight. It's more interesting than the truth.

In case anyone is wondering, it is COLD here. Stupid winter.

Hope it warms up a little. Adrian and I are off to New York Friday night for the 3-day weekend. We're going to see Chicago, as Bebe Neuwirth is starring in it again and we're all about her. We're also going to a Chinese new yer party that a friend of a friend of Adrian's is having. And Sunday night we're meeting up with Ethan, who's going up with some other friends for the night, to go to a club. Very fun. But it'll be more fun if it's warmer than the South Pole.

Note to Scooter Pooter: please don't be pissed that I didn't call and set something up during this visit...the preplanned events have us scurrying around and I am afraid we would not have quality time. I am making it my mission to see you soon, however. You have been warned.

Oh, and I have to say that Lost was very intriguing this week. It's even more intriguing because we hadn't set the TiVo to go long, and as a result we missed the last thing Desmond said to Charlie. Time to go grab it online. And also change the TiVo settings.

I flirted with Jai Rodriguez on his MySpace page earlier this week. He responded with a LOL. I'm in heaven.

Happy Valentine's Day

Strange day.

An ice storm prevented me from going to work. Actually, it was my unwillingness to drive in the storm that prevented me from going.

Adrian's salon was closed, which means his Valentine's flowers are sitting at the florist. Or outside the front door of the salon.

I put his Valentine on the toilet lid, where i knew he'd find it this morning.

I'm spending tonight at a sleep clinic at a local hospital to see just what the hell is going on that makes me snore like...well, like a guy who snores really bad.

Cute Bus Boy

No, not a cute busboy...a cute boy on the bus! On the condo shuttle bus to the Metro, that is, and it was all the more surprising because the average age in this complex appears to be something like 55. But there he was, getting on at the building next to mine, then sitting next to me (I'm pretty sure there were plenty of single seats left, though I might be wrong) with his leg pressed up against mine the whole ride. We didn't talk (he had his iPod on) but we managed to sit next to each other again on the train and chatted a bit. Seems like a nice guy, fairly outgoing. Definitely got a gay vibe off of him. It would be nice to know other gay people here, and not just creepy old men like Adrian met back at the beginning of August. He just started taking the bus/Metro combination, so hopefully we'll see each other and I can figure things out, and then we can have him over for drinks or something. In fact, maybe I'll fix a drink right now. Apple martini, anyone?

Sometimes I Really Hate My Job

Tuesday, when it all happened, my title was going to just be "I Really Hate My Job," but after settling for a couple days I can qualify that with "Sometimes."

It's no single thing, just a number of frustrations that all hit at once. Like the guy with no social skills that I'm required to have working on projects with me because no one else will work with him but they aren't willing to fire him. He is one annoying bastard. And then there's the guy who tried to slide in and take one of my major projects -- the only one I'm really excited about -- for his own.

Both of these guys, along with my boss who's pretty much an idiot in a very high pay grade who's content to not do anything between now and the time he retures other than play little bureaucratic games, just made for an all-around annoying day. And the freezing weather without the benefit of snow, which might shut down work for a day, ain't helping.

When I came home I really, really wanted a drink, and that's not really a good sign.

Maybe it's just me, a general inability to work with others. I'm just finding that I feel I set high stadards for myself, and I want to tackle challenges, and I just feel I work with people who are content to be basic government bureaucrats. All of which suggests that if I really want to accomplish something cool in my professional life -- and I do -- it'll have to be outside of government, Probably owning my own firm. Which sounds an awful lot like a conversation College Roommate Dave and I had 13 years ago.

But right now I'm watching "How They Make That" and I'm seeing some jobs that suck more, so it's not too bad I guess. Things got a little better this week, but I'm pretty close to counting the days until I'm done here.

How 'Bout That Super Bowl?

I notice I haven't been posting too much lately. That's not so good -- one of my recent goals has been to post at least every other day. Lord knows there's enough going on that i could write about. I'm not sure why I'm not. Well, I have a couple ideas, but nothing definitive.

So last night we had some friends over: Michael, Michael, and his boyfriend, Mike. That only got confusing about a dozen times. Adrian was very cute...he made placecards for everyone. Not much help for those three. We had a great time, the food was really good (well, the stuff that Adrian made, not necessarily the hummus and tarts that I made) and the company was even better. Michael and Mike have been dating for a few months and are SO cute together. And Michael, of course, is a doll, and now that he lives closer I expect to see more of him. Actually, we met up Friday night at Apex, which was a lot of fun, considering he and I haven't danced together in oh, about 4 or 5 years.

I realized I have a dilemma: Not only does Arliington Michael now live in DC, it appears that Richmond Michael has just moved into Arlington. Now, all my Michaels have nicknames (that's critical to keeping them straight, not that any of them are straight), and once I give them nicknames they remain the same. These boys have both moved multiple times since I met them 7 years ago, but I haven't changed their names. But now that Richmond Michael lives in Arlington, a change might be in order. Sure, he could become the new Arlington Michael, but that what happens to the original Arlington Michael? Does he become DC Michael? That seems a little...bland. I suggested calling him leather Michael, just as a joke, but that took the conversation in a direction that I don't feel comfortable sharing here. Or anywhere.

I guess I'll figure it out. And if that's my only real dilemma at the moment, then I must be doing something right.

Oh, and no, I didn't watch the Super Bowl this year. Though I did TiVo it. To watch the commercials later.
