And So It Ends

The word went out today: Diary-X's drive failure is unrecoverable. Though I have backups of the first 4 years of my journal, October 2000 - October 2004, I don't think I saved anything during the last 16 months. Of course, I didn't post as much last year as I used to, in part because we were gone so much on different trips, but there were indeed some things that would have been nice to save. I will have to sit down and write up my memories before they vanish, as they tend to do more often now that I am a bit older.

The lesson here is to backup your journal. Often.

I'm not sure yet where I'll host the journal, if I'll just load up the software to run it myself or try another service...I've never really cared for Blogspot too much so I'll see what my other options are. Once I get it up I'll look at transferring all my archived files up to the new journal.

I gave some thought to not journaling anymore, it's not the same as it was nearly 6 years ago when I started, just doesn't seem that interesting to anyone else. Then again, the fact that I've managed to keep a journal this long when I could never do that before suggests I have found the right medium to keep me going, and I should continue. Just a few days before the crash I was going back through the archives reliving some very cool memories. I need to keep recording those. Because I have a very cool life.

The Temporary Journal

Normally, this is where my journal would be. However, my journaling provider, Diary-X, has suffered a massive drive failure, and the hard drive is currently at a date restoring company to see what can be salvaged. I hope it can be recovered, because it looks like I haven't backed up my journal since going to Iraq in October 2004, which means I lost all of last year's entries if they're unrecoverable. And that would make me sad. Lesson learned.

But if all you need is a temporary fix, here you go:

- we signed the contract for our new home in Washington DC, we'll close in early March, and we'll move there in June.

- I've been to DC 3 times in 4 weeks for work, but it looks like I'm done with trips until mid-March.

- We're enjoying the Olympics, though I'm starting to realize I'm more of a Summer guy than a Winter.

- My hip-hop class is going well, it's great therapy after a bad day. And I'm getting better!!

- Adrian's doing well and is already looking at some redesigns for our new home.
